Summer Conference 2010 – call for abstracts
We are now accepting abstracts for posters and the Student session at the 2010 Summer Conference in Brighton. These can be on any topic in applied microbiology.
There are prizes of £150, £100 and £50 available to the winners of first second and third prizes for posters. For the best student oral presentation there is a prize available of £300!

PECS news
George Aboagye and Jess Rollason have stepped down from their committee positions and we would like to thank them for their dedicated work with PECS. We are pleased to announce that, Simon Gould (Chair) and Amara Anyogu (Secretary) have been duly elected into these positions, welcome to you both.
The PECS committee would now like to invite nominations for events officer, events team, communications officer and Webmaster. The posts are available from October 2009 (for one year’s term) and are open to all student or early career scientist members of SfAM.
As part of the events team members are responsible for organising the PECS events at the annual summer conference. This includes an icebreaker session, a dedicated student and early career scientist workshop and social activities.
The communications officer is responsible for compiling the PECS dedicated page in Microbiologist and a monthly PECS news section for the SfAM email bulletin. Other responsibilities include attending the SfAM communications subcommittee meeting and becoming involved with SfAM communication initiatives.
The Webmaster is responsible for updating the blog to keeps PECS members up to date on PECS news and events.

PECS events at the SfAM summer conference 2009
Following on from the success of our events in previous years the PECS committee are pleased to announce our events for the 2009 summer conference in Manchester. The conference will be held at Manchester Metropolitan University between Monday 6th and Thursday 9th July and covers Zoonotic challenges of the 21st century. See our links section for details of the grants available to members to allow them to attend the meeting.
PECS will be hosting events of Monday 6th and Tuesday 7th and PECS members will be in attendance throughout the conference.
Monday 6th July - Stats session followed by our PECS icebreaker meal and the quiz.
Tuesday 7th July - Networking skills session follwed by a visit to the 5 best bars in manchester.
